Fiona Carver is a painter from the Rutland/Leicestershire border. She trained at Edinburgh College of Art graduating with a BA (hons) in Furniture Design before moving to London where she worked as a picture framer and then managed an art gallery. Returning to Rutland 9 years ago gave her the inspiration to start painting again and she now creates observational oil paintings from life, both ‘en plein air’ and in her studio.
Her subject is often decided by the weather and time of year. Over the winter months she enjoys studio still life work, inspired by the cool winter light and the subtle way it hits her subjects. Her low-key palette gives the paintings a calm and intimate quality, drawing the viewer in. She chooses her objects for their shape, colour and the way they interact with each other, but also for her connection to them and their history.
When the conditions are just right she paints outside, either in her local surroundings or further afield on painting trips to the coast. She is interested in capturing the moment, the atmosphere, colours and emotion experienced at that time.
She has exhibited with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and been shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. In 2023 she won the British Contemporary Award at The Artist and Leisure Painter Exhibition. Her work has been included in a number of print making books and has appeared on the cover of Country Living Magazine.
