Luis was born in 1963 in Wrexham. He acquired an Architecture degree at Nottingham University after which he joined De La Rue as an apprentice banknote designer. In 1998 he left to become a freelance artist/ illustrator, specialising in the portrayal of tennis players and gained commissions from the Lawn Tennis Association and the All England Club, Wimbledon. It is only very recently that he has given up his day job to concentrate full-time on painting for a living.
Luis's paintings are unique and instantly identifiable, often straddling the boundary between Abstract and Representational. They are mostly painted in a high key, with soft, light, hazy pastel shades of Oil colour rendered in slabs of paint, often reminiscent of a patchwork quilt.
In 2013, Luis entered the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year, and after seeing off thousands of other hopefuls, made it through to the final and finished as runner-up, thus gaining exposure to a much wider audience.
As one would imagine, Peter Barker Fine Art is thrilled that Luis has agreed to join our band of fine painters!
