Hazel was born in Surrey in 1954 and trained in London and Leicester, graduating in 1976. Since then she has built up an exceptional list of highly successful solo and mixed shows both in the UK and abroad in countries as widespread as Japan, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.
Hazel is one of the UK's most highly acclaimed artists, and is well-known for her role as an Art Expert on Channel 4's 'Watercolour Challenge', and her two series of 'A Splash of Colour' made by Anglia TV. She is also the author of 11 highly-regarded books on painting, mainly in watercolour, and has featured in 16 DVDs. Her work is in private, public and corporate collections: National Portrait Gallery London (profile of Bill Brandt), Trowbridge Museum & Art Gallery, Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, BBC, BP, British Lung Foundation, The Lister, Ritz Club (Ritz Hotel Casino), Durban Hilton, Hotels worldwide.
Hazel says that "if I could wish for anything for my paintings it is that the pleasure and excitement I receive from my subjects will be experienced by those who later view them." That excitement and enthusiasm for painting is self-evident when you meet Hazel, and it is burning as bright as ever it did. She paints in both oils and watercolour, but it is perhaps her consummate skill in the watercolour medium that is so economically glorious. With studios in both London and Cape Town, she divides her time between England and her beloved Africa, producing compelling studies of the indigenous African wildlife and people, especially the Massai with their colourful traditional dress.
We are thrilled and honoured to represent Hazel in Peter Barker Fine Art, the only UK gallery north of London to do so, and we know you will love her work.
